50 Scholars from Around the World Come to the Dhow Countries Music Academy, Zanzibar to discuss the Music of Africa



From 10-13 June 2015 the Dhow Countries Music Academy will host the largest gathering of international scholars in the study of the Music of Africa ever to be held in Tanzania. The Conference will bring together scholars from Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Namibia, Kenya, Germany, United States, Canada, United Kingdom and France to hear 40 academic papers on studies of African Music.

The Conference is titled Memory, Power and Knowledge in African Music and Beyond. It has been organized by the World Music Program of Hildesheim University, Germany and is hosted by the Dhow Countries Music Academy, Zanzibar. The Volkswagen Corporation is sponsoring this conference.

Two major Keynote Presentations will be part of the Conference. These will be presented by Professor Christopher Ballantine of the University of Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa titled Song, Memory, Power and the South African Archive and Professor Philip V. Bohlman of the University of Chicago, U.S.A. titled Africa Aporio: Ethnomusicology in Search of Lost Time. Both of these scholars are widely published and well noted in the field of Ethnomusicology.

The Dhow Countries Music Academy is honored to have been selected to host this extremely high-level of scholars in the field of African Music Study. The DCMA Taarab-Kidumbak Ensemble, returning from a performance at the International Africa Festival in Germany, will perform for the Conference participants on Thursday 11th June.
