Frost & Sullivan honors DERMALOG with biometrics prize for achievements in Africa

The consulting company Frost & Sullivan has awarded Germany’s largest biometrics manufacturer DERMALOG and its customized solutions and products for Africa with the “2015 African Biometrics Company of the Year Award”. DERMALOG is particularly successful with a large bank installation in Nigeria.

In South Africa’s economic hub, the German biometrics manufacturer DERMALOG was honored with the “2015 African Biometrics Company of the Year Award”. The prize was awarded to the Hamburg-based company for its outstanding achievements in twenty African countries. DERMALOG has thus become the leading biometrics company in Africa.

A key reason for the award is also the innovative portfolio of fingerprint scanners and biometric systems from DERMALOG. In countries such as Angola, Ghana, Tanzania, and Zambia, it contributes sustainably and decisively to solving local challenges such as identity theft, corruption, demography, and migration as well as the economic development of these countries.

In Nigeria, DERMALOG currently cooperates with the Central Bank and 23 other banks in a major project in which all bank customers in the country are registered via DERMALOG biometrics. Customers receive a bank verification number with which all of their transactions can be completed securely and reliably via fingerprint. In 2013, DERMALOG won an international tender from the Nigerian Central Bank for the 50-million-dollar project.

Meanwhile, the biometric installation from DERMALOG has successfully registered over 18 million customers in Nigeria. So far, approximately 10,000 double identities and multiple registrations have been averted every day, thereby preventing fraud and money laundering in the financial sector thanks to the reliability of the installation. The DERMALOG ABIS (Automated Biometric Identification System) has detected over one million individuals attempting to obtain double or multiple identities. Using DERMALOG fingerprint scanners and software, all participating banks can ensure that for all transactions, the identity reliably matches the customer because the customer must always be physically present for the registration.

The Hamburg-based biometrics innovation leader is continuing to build on its success in the West African country. In the near future, registered bank customers will also be able to withdraw cash from ATMs and pay at cash machines using their fingerprints.

DERMALOG Identification Systems, which is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, is the largest German biometrics manufacturer and one of the world’s leading companies for biometric identification. Engineers and computer scientists are continually developing new and innovative products. The product portfolio ranges from biometric border control to biometric ID cards to new “FingerLogin” and “FingerPayment” solutions. In addition to Germany and Europe, the major markets of DERMALOG include Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

In Germany, DERMALOG has supplied over 20,000 fingerprint scanners to registration offices and immigration authorities. Fingerprints are thus stored in new passports, ID cards, and residence permits. DERMALOG has meanwhile delivered an additional 150,000 fingerprint scanners to over 70 countries. Large ABIS (Automated Biometric Identification System) installations from DERMALOG have been delivered to more than 130 governmental customers worldwide.

DERMALOG also provides solutions to banks and ATM manufacturers such as Wincor Nixdorf, which has provided worldwide more than 1,000 ATMs with fingerprint technology from DERMALOG, thereby replacing the less secure PIN.

Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) receives US$50 million from the Islamic Development Bank for project financing

The funds will be used to finance projects located across the numerous African IDB member countries

Africa Finance Corporation (AFC)  is pleased to announce its acceptance of a US$50 million 15 year line of financing, with a 13 year six month repayment period, from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).

The funds will be used to finance projects located across the numerous African IDB member countries.  The projects will be structured in a way that is compliant with Islamic Finance, focusing particularly on infrastructural and agricultural projects that promote the economic and social development of the communities concerned.

This is AFC’s first Islamic finance borrowing and is the result of several years of increasing cooperation and collaboration between the two institutions.  AFC initiated discussions in 2009 and a Memorandum of Understanding was later signed with the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD), the private sector arm of the IDB Group.

Building on this groundwork a team from the IDB visited AFC in 2014, following the reaffirmation of AFC’s international credit rating of A3/P2 by Moody’s and based on several more years’ track record in landmark project financing and development. AFC’s involvement in projects such as the Bakwena Toll Road, a transport infrastructure development which has connected South Africa’s industrial heartland to the nearest deep water port in Mozambique, were instrumental to the success of the corporation’s application.

Andrew Alli, President and Chief Executive Officer of AFC, commented on the announcement: “As AFC’s first Islamic Finance loan, this agreement represents an important step for the corporation.  The Islamic finance sector is responding to high demand and rapidly expanding, with a large number of Islamic finance institutions establishing operations here as a result of Africa’s significant Muslim population. There is enormous growth potential within this industry.

“We intend to fully utilize the loan and capital to fund and develop projects within IDB member countries, several of which are also member states of AFC.  It is with loans such as these that AFC can continue to improve the quality of the continent’s infrastructure and with it help to boost Africa’s economic growth.”

As well as providing important financing for the corporation’s activities, AFC’s agreement with the IDB establishes an important, intercontinental relationship, which will hopefully lead to further collaboration between African and Middle Eastern institutions in the future.

Angola will host the Meeting of the Ministers of Finance and Governors of the Central African Banks, the African Caucus

From 27–28 August in Luanda, the Republic of Angola will host the Meeting of the Ministers of Finance and Governors of the Central African Banks, the African Caucus, with the aim of strengthening the voice of the continent's representatives on important issues relating to the socio-economic development of the Bretton Woods Institutions (BWIs).

The meeting being held at the Talatona Convention Centre is an important opportunity for the African leaders, represented by their Ministers of Finance and Planning and Governors of the Central Banks, to jointly present in a coordinated and organised way the major and current concerns affecting the economies of the African continent, namely the building of infrastructure and industrialisation of production processes.

Hosting an event the size of the African Caucus in Angola should help our country to strengthen its relationship with international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the African Development Bank, with the aim of mobilising support for the financial needs of the country's development.

On the other hand, holding the forum in Angola will improve the country's visibility, making way for new opportunities for diversifying the economy.

The subjects that stand out on the agenda in the six panels are the General Vision of the Regional Economy, Economic Transformation and Diversification, Discussion on the 2015 African Caucus Memorandum and the Financing of Regional Projects connected to infrastructure.

Personalities like the Ex-President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, and other individuals connected to the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), the World Bank (WB) and the African Development Bank (AFDB) have been invited to speak on the topics above.

Angola was formally designated as the leader of the African Caucus Group in 2015 at the event that took place from 3–4 September 2014 in the Friendship Hall Conference Centre in Khartoum, Republic of Sudan.

Founded in 1963 as the African Group of Governors of the World Bank Group and the IMF, the Caucus aims to strengthen the voice of the Governors of the African Continent on important issues relating to the socio-economic development of the African Region, within the Bretton Woods Institutions (World Bank and International Monetary Fund).

WAZIRI MKUU: SERIKALI INATAFUTA SULUHISHO LA DIASPORA KUPIGA KURA

WAZIRI MKUU Mizengo Pinda amesema Serikali bado inatafuta suluhisho la kudumu litakalowezesha Watanzania waishio ughaibuni (Diaspora) waweze kupiga kura wakiwa huko waliko.

Amerejea nchini jana usiku.

Rais Yoweri Museveni ndiye mlezi wa chama hicho na alikuwa amemwalika Rais Kikwete kwenye maadhimisho hayo.

Cross listing of Exchange Traded Funds on African exchanges Investors to gain exposure to shares listed on Johannesburg, Kenyan and Nigerian stock exchanges

Discussions are currently underway between market participants in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa to launch the cross listing of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs).

ETFs are a collection of equities, commodities or bonds bundled together in a fund to ensure that investor risks are evenly spread across this range of securities. ETFs are only written off specific index-related securities that are listed on a stock exchange, and this makes it possible to invest in a diverse range of securities through a single exchange traded product.
The concept of cross listing an ETF is the same as cross listing a share, or listing it on more than one exchange. It provides domestic investors with access to opportunities from another market, in the convenient and cost effective form of an ETF.
By cross listing ETFs on African exchanges, investors will be given access to liquid company shares tracked by indices such as the FTSE/ JSE Top 40; the FTSE/ NSE Kenya 15 Index; and the MSCI/Nigeria.  “ETFs are one of the fastest growing asset-class categories in the world. By collaborating with Africa’s largest stock exchanges, we hope to spearhead this trend in Africa,” says Director for Capital Markets at the JSE, Donna Oosthuyse.

The cross listing of ETFs will fulfil two main functions: Investors will have exposure to a diverse range of top performing  Nigerian, Kenyan and South African companies in a convenient and cost effective way; and the cross-listings of ETFs will also improve the liquidity of Africa’s largest stock exchanges.

Oosthuyse explains that the advantages for companies included in the ETF indices, and for the exchanges from whence they come, are that ETFs need to be ‘fully covered’. “This means that the asset manager that is managing the ETF portfolio has to buy and sell the underlying shares on the home exchange, depending on the activity of buying and selling of the ETF.”
Oosthuyse further clarifies: "If an ETF from Kenya or Nigeria for instance is listed on the JSE, then the asset manager in Kenya or Nigeria has to buy and sell the constituent shares on the home market, as units in the ETF are bought and sold. This drives liquidity in the home market. In addition to this, it provides extra visibility on the shares on that exchange to new investors who in all likelihood don’t yet trade on that market.”

Haruna Jalo-Waziri, Executive Director, Business Development, at the Nigerian Stock Exchange says “This collaboration underscores our commitment to providing investors with a wide range of investment products to help them realize their financial goals. ETFs are becoming attractive to many investors offering them portfolio diversification and reduce cost of investing. We are proud once again to be collaborating with reputable exchanges in Africa to bring this new and exciting investment opportunity to bolster trade across multiple markets.”

As part of an on-going effort to deepen and promote liquidity, choice of products and investor interest across African markets, the JSE and the African Securities Exchanges Association (ASEA), supported by the World Bank Group, will be hosting the third Building African Financial Markets Seminar from 16 - 18 September. The conference will gather key representatives from stock exchanges, regulatory bodies, stockbroking firms and other market participants from several African countries, where ideas on how to grow Africa’s capital markets will be discussed.

African power utility sector shines bright about the outlook ahead: PwC report

  • Survey finds companies and sector stakeholders optimistic about a range of key African electricity issues.
  • 96% say there is a medium or high probability that load shedding will be the exception rather than the norm by 2025.
  • Technological change expected to transform prospects for rural electrification.
  • Business model transformation lies ahead for many power utility companies.
Power utility companies and stakeholders across Africa anticipate a brighter and different outlook for the sector in the decade ahead, according to a new report from PwC. Fifty one senior power and utility sector executives from 15 African countries took part in PwC’s Africa power & utilities survey. They report continued concern about some of the immediate risks to the power system, but are also optimistic about the longer term prospects for electricity in Africa.

Download the report 'Africa power & utilities survey' 2015: http://www.apo-mail.org/P&U-Africa-Survey.pdf
Two thirds (67%) of those we interviewed cited ageing or badly maintained infrastructure as a high or very high concern. Encouragingly, many felt this situation would improve, with only 39 per cent predicting that it would be a similarly high or very high concern in five years’ time.  And looking ahead to 2025, they anticipate definite step changes in a number of key issues:
  • An overwhelming majority (96%) say there is a medium or high probability that load shedding will be the exception rather than the norm by 2025.
  • Indeed, nearly three quarters (72%) are confident enough to rate that scenario as a high probability.
  • 94% say there is a medium or high probability that, by 2025, the challenge of finding a market design that can balance investment, affordability and access issues will have been largely solved.
  • 70% expect cross border electricity flows to be significant by 2025, accounting for a third or more of electricity generated.
Angeli Hoekstra, Africa Power & Utility Leader, PwC, said:
“There is much to be optimistic about and the results point the way to improvements ahead. But security of electricity supply and cost reflective tariffs continue to be the number one challenges. Until they are resolved, power systems will remain stretched, as investments in the power sector will be limited. Addressing cost reflective tariffs while ensuring social equity is a key challenge.”
The survey also highlights the energy transformation that is taking place, as the market vision for the future will be a mixture of large scale centralised generation and local mini grid and offgrid distributed generation according to the fast majority of survey participants (83%).
  • This is supported by that seventy per cent of the survey respondents believe there is a medium to high probability that advances and cost reductions in green renewable off-grid technology will deliver an exponential increase in rural electrification levels by 2025.
  • And there is consensus that power companies will need to change their business models to respond to energy transformation. Eighty eight per cent expect that future power utility business models will be transformed by 2030 with a quarter of them saying they will be unrecognisable from those operating today.
Hoekstra commented further:
“Technological and regulatory change and new investments presents very exciting opportunities to increase electrification access and electricity supply. New businesses and business models will be created and Africa will leapfrog into a better and more sustainable energy future if all stakeholders in the sector, from customers to governments, new businesses, regulators and utilities will embrace the opportunity”

Waziri Mkuu anatarajiwa kurejea nchini leo jioni.

Kampuni ya Business Connexion yahamasisha kuhusu fursa zilizopo

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania, July 28, 2015/ -- Tanzania ina fursa nyingi ambazo bado hazijatumika.
